Why does it seem easier to isolate during the holidays instead of connecting with others?

I run in to this with a lot of my empty nester clients, the urge to just stay home, get under a comfy blanket and watch Netflix until the New Year. It may seem easier when the holidays look different than earlier years to do this. Here is why you might consider an alternative…

When you connect with others, you release oxytocin, otherwise known as the bonding hormone. It triggers something in your brain making you want deeper relationships. If you isolate, you are actually releasing a stress hormone and your cortisol levels go up. It becomes easier to avoid others which may lead to depression and other difficult situations like empty nester syndrome. This time is hard enough trying to figure out what your new identity is without kids in the house.

If you choose to connect with others through volunteering, visiting with friends, talking on the phone with a loved one, you will be choosing to trigger a positive brain pattern. Social interaction is crucial for mental health. Get out there and connect!
